The MLA is constantly working on behalf of the hospitality industry to ensure that our member's voices are heard when it comes to state legislation. Below are a few of our most recent government affairs updates: 1.) Secured initial passage of the country's most comprehensive Short Term Rentals bill with MLA-led items including: Equitable taxation of STRs, including vacation and corporate rentals Basic health & safety regulations Explicit anti-discrimination language to protect consumers Protection of municipal oversight and regulation to develop rules for their own communities 2.) Passage of a tough Boston Ordinance on Short Term Rentals that disallows most investor units in the City of Boston, and creates a new regulatory structure for inspection and management of permitted units 3.) Defeat of state bills of concern including: A Massachusetts "Travelers Bill of Rights" that would have dissected each lodging establishment's potential health and safety risks - would have further established these as "unfair or deceptive acts or practices" within the meaning of the FTC Act and state law Bills that would prohibit the use of credit reports by employers Bills that would establish new solid waste or recycling targets on commercial operator
